Direct Champagne Sales via a “mailing list” in the United States?!?

This isn’t the first time this a Champagne producer has done this, but I thought I would point out that small producer Pierre Morlet has launched direct sales in the United States via their website and a mailing list. If the wines aren’t available in your local market, this is a great way to gain access to them. It wouldn’t surprise me to see more small producers take this route as US distribution of the smaller producers has always been spotty. Also adding to the difficulty of getting your wine out there are the many incredibly backwards state wine shipping laws that prohibit retailers from shipping wine within or to a state. However, producers can normally ship which means a Champagne producer who establishes a US business/winery base would be able to ship as a winery.

So how are Pierrer Morlet’s wines? I would call them good values for your dollar. I haven’t been blown away by any of the cuvees, but they are all solid and fall on the fuller bodied side of the equation. With almost 75% of the family’s holdings being Pinot Noir from Avenay-Val-d'Or, Aÿ, Bisseuil, and Mutigny, plus the use of some oak, this only makes sense.
